Awareness Raising Events concerning the application and enforcement of Community legislation on shipments of waste, on landfills and on waste management plans and waste prevention programmes related to the “new” Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/EC

The generation of waste constantly increased in the EU over the last decades. Therefore, the prevention, reuse, recycling, recovery, and environmental sound treatment and disposal of waste is one of the main priorities on the environmental agenda of the European Union.

The current EU legislation sets high requirements regarding the disposal of waste within landfills or thermal treatment plants and the transfrontier shipment of waste to other countries. The legislation in addition also requires a shift towards a resource saving economy and towards a recycling society, including waste management planning and waste prevention However, in current practice the objective to avoid damage to human health and the environment is not always met, and there are deficits in the implementation of the legislation on national level.

Consequently the European Commission initiated a project related to a series of workshops at national level aiming to:

  • Identify current problems with the implementation and enforcement of the relevant legislation
  • Exchange experiences and identify good practice
  • Discuss possible measures to eliminate deficits and to strengthen cooperation.

This homepage provides you with detailed information (including schedules, venues, enrolment details and travel information) for all events scheduled in 2010, and offers presentations, results and reports for all events held in the fields of landfill of waste, shipment of waste and Waste Management Planning from 2007 through 2009 under the links events 2007/2008/2009.

In addition, you will find general background information on the three topics, legislation and data on European and national level.
